    Enneagram Research: Objective Science, Formal Mathematical Science, and Empirical Science

      In the Objective Enneagram Project we aim to bring attention to Enneagram research and study of the Enneagram as both an Objective Science and a Formal Mathematical Science.

      Why?

      The Enneagram of Process and the Enneagram of Personality both qualify as a scientific discovery and meet all the criteria of a scientific discovery. The Enneagram is not a “human-made” theory, but belongs to the natural laws of the universe.

      The Enneagram of Process, or the Law of 3 and 7 interconnected forming the diatonic octave of arising and completing, and The Enneagram of Personality, or the Law of 3 separated from completing are objective, verifiable, and reliably deductive, thus, qualifying as a scientific discovery.

      Since the arrival of the Enneagram of Personality to the west in the early 1970s, there has been interest in academic empirical research. According to Google Scholar documented research began in the 1990s and is growing rapidly. However, those who dive deep into study the Enneagram also know that the Enneagram of Personality has been verified outside the western academy of science for thousands of years.

      Ancient science was based on observing patterns, and ancient people also realized that developing objective consciousness was essential to objective observation of patterns. Development of objective consciousness became the tool for observation and repeatable reliable patterns served as a method to predict outcomes.

      Because written history is 5,000 years old in the 300,000 years of Homo sapiens, the inevitable question of “hard data” enters our minds. But, it helps to think in a larger lens. In 2026, we are 400 years into Western empirical science. In 5,000 years, our academic science will be the ancient misunderstood science.

      In the Objective Enneagram Project, we aim to expand Enneagram research and study to both Objective Science and Formal Mathematical Science. Simple definitions are included here.

      Objective Science and the Enneagram

      • Reasoning and verification from the natural laws that created the universe, this can be applied to any unifying theory of the universe. It stands in contrast to science with sub-laws based on particular conditions of time and space.
        • The Enneagram is based on the Laws of 3 and 7 (covered throughout this three part article)

      Formal Mathematical Science and the Enneagram

      • Mathematics as the science of patterns: pattern recognition, pattern description, and pattern explanation. Proving a mathematical pattern requires demonstrating that a perceived regularity holds true for all cases.
        • As a branch of abstract mathematics, the application of System Theory to the Enneagram can be used to establish a model of how the Enneagram functions as a whole, capable of predicting complex instances of human personality.

      Empirical Science and the Enneagram

      • Empirical science on the Enneagram is underway, as seen in 8,000+ empirical studies on the efficacy of the Enneagram of Personality (search on google scholar, April 2026)
        • Because the observer changes the observed, objectivity in science is challenging due to bias of personality type, societal and cultural norms, political party, and funding sources. The good news is that scientists can develop objective consciousness with dedicated understanding and practice.
        • Also, it is interesting to note that although not acknowledged by the modern “academy” of Academic Empirical Science, verification of the 9 patterns of personality and the diatonic octave of process were verified as early as the emergence of agricultural societies and likely prior to that in indigenous peoples.
